Privacy Policy for TabVault

Introduction

TabVault (“we”, “our”, or “the extension”) is a browser extension that helps users save and organize browser tabs with AI-powered semantic search. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.

Data Collection and Storage

What We Collect

TabVault collects and stores the following data locally on your device only:

Saved tabs: URL, title, favicon, timestamp
AI-generated metadata: Summary, category, and tags for each saved tab (generated using your own Anthropic API key)
Collections: User-created collection names and assignments
Settings: Your preferences (API key, toggle states)

Where Data is Stored

All data is stored locally in your browser using Chrome’s chrome.storage.local API. No data is sent to our servers, third-party services, or any external parties except as described below.

Third-Party Services

TabVault uses the following third-party service with your explicit consent:

Anthropic API (Claude):

When you enable “Auto-summarize on save” and provide your own Anthropic API key, TabVault sends the text content of saved web pages to Anthropic’s Claude API to generate summaries, categories, and tags.
You control this: You provide your own API key, and you can disable this feature at any time in Settings.
What is sent: Page title, URL, and extracted text content (up to 4,000 characters).

Important: TabVault does not store, transmit, or have access to your Anthropic API key beyond your local browser storage. Your API key never leaves your device except when making direct requests to Anthropic’s servers.

Data Security

All data is stored locally in your browser’s encrypted storage.
Your Anthropic API key is stored securely using Chrome’s storage API and is never transmitted to any server other than Anthropic’s official API endpoint.
We do not have access to your data, API keys, or browsing activity.

Data Retention and Deletion

You can delete any saved tab or collection at any time from within the extension.
Uninstalling TabVault permanently deletes all locally stored data from your browser.
To delete your Settings (including your API key), simply uninstall the extension or clear the data via Chrome’s extension settings.

Permissions Explained

TabVault requests the following browser permissions:

tabs: To access tab information (title, URL, favicon) when you save a tab.
storage: To save your tabs, collections, and settings locally.
activeTab: To identify the current tab when you click “Save this tab”.
scripting: To extract page content for AI summarization (only when you enable this feature).
<all_urls>: To access page content across all websites for text extraction. This permission is only used when you explicitly save a tab with AI summarization enabled.

Children’s Privacy

TabVault is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected with an updated “Last Updated” date at the top of this document.
